Father's Day in the UK this year is on the 18th June, so this is an advance warning to order in those mugs and personalised socks while you can. Father's Day was first celebrated on 19th June 1910, after a young lady who heard a speech about Mother's Day in church decided that fathers should be celebrated too. The lady, Sonora Smart from Washington, had been brought up by her father after her mother died in childbirth and convinved the church clergymen to announce an official Father's Day.
- In 1966, US President Lyndon B. Johnson decided the third Sunday in June should be Father's Day.
- Six years later President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
Many countries around the world celebrate Father's Day and each has their own unique custom. In Mexico, there is a 13 mile race, in Germany, it is traditional to go on hiking trips with other fathers. Fathers in France get a more relaxing day with no running or hiking involved; instead they get adorned with gifts, including the traditional red rose.
The UK's Father's Day traditions are similar to those of France, with most children spending time with their fathers and spoiling them with gifts.
